Dear Minister:

On behalf of Meetings Mean Business Canada, congratulations on your appointment as Canada’s Minister of Finance. The task before you to restart Canada’s growth is immense. We wish you nothing but success and want to be part of your plan to get the economy going again.

As the voice of 229,000 Canadians who rely on business events for their livelihood, including conventions, conferences, exhibitions and trade shows, we are a proud group of professionals ready to go back to work safely.

Pre-COVID, the Canadian business events industry ranked 6th out of 50 countries in economic impact, generating $33 billion through direct spending and $19.3 billion directly contributed to Canada’s GDP, stimulating more than one-third of Canada’s tourism activity.

Our many venues, planners and suppliers are the backbones of critical events that support every industry that drives Canada’s economy: manufacturing, health, finance, technology, energy, agriculture and more. Without business events, we risk not only these 229,000 jobs but the future of thousands of businesses that create economic, social and intellectual impact for Canada.

Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan has been a significant help as our businesses deal with the economic hardship caused by the pandemic. We implore you to continue these measures and to implement the recommendations of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s Recovery plan here.

We wish you every success. We look forward to the opportunity to speak with you directly about the impact on our business events industry and how we can help Canada recover from this crisis.

Thank you,

Clark Grue
